Summer Breeze 2009 Review

SUMMER BREEZE 2009

The Summer Breeze marks the traditional close-off of the open air festival season each year!
And it had evolved, especially in the latest years since the Summer Breeze had moved to Dinkelsbühl. This year the Summer Breeze had reached by 25000 visitors a new record and became the second biggest Metal festival! The organizers obviously invested a lot in their new area, they had bought. The ground of the car entrance to the campsite had been tarmaced. So no more weather handicap which meant there was no longer traffic jam. The organization on the festivalssite worked very well as it had done the years before!
The program began by a newcomer contest and the following Metal Blade label night in the Party Tent, the regular billing started with the newcomer contest winner on thursday.
And again the Summer Breeze presented a very varied billing of good taste showing you highlights like Kreator, Backyard Babies, Life Of Agony, Amon Amarth, Volbeat, Voivod or Opeth!
At this year’s Summer Breeze 90 bands appeared on three stages in four days for about 25000 visitors (Sold out!)

Wednesday
Partytent
Cyrcus The tent was astonishingly filled when the quintet opened the festival as the newcomer competition by “From The Ashes”. The band from near by Düsseldorf impressed by a very own style sounding modern between Rock and Metal and even the song “Something Inside” in which middle section they integrated the Doro-hymn “All We Are” had catchy hit character.

Sheephead The Bavarian fivepiece rocked the tent by their pretty Swedish orientated Deathcore. Probably that’s why one track was named by its capital “Stockholm”. In the end their fronter searched contact to the numerous fans in the photo pit celebrating the somehow home competition.

Dreamshade The pretty young sixpack from Switzerland showed a more keyboard dominated Prog Death Metal – sound enthusing the tent crowd by the opener “As Serenity”, “Buried”, “Wide” and the final “Revive”.

Cypecore The five young guys had some kind of a home match, too. After they had surprised me a lot on the smaller Queens Of Metal two months before they impressed me again by their tight as agile performance. The songwriting of the played titles “”Everdying”, “The Origin Of Hate”, “Mission”, “Innocent” and “Something Inside” showed some In Flames – relation, but a high quality one. Just some friend of the band played the loud speaker clown what wasn’t necessary at all, the band killed anyway!

Second Relation The last band of the competition surprised by its age as by its high talent. All five members were teenagers and played a silent style with a high approach reminding to the mighty saturday headliner Opeth. The only negative aspect was perhaps they didn’t show that much stage action while playing “18:27”, “Discolour”, “Misery Of Time” and “Oblivion” (all from their brand new demo “Lynette”). But that didn’t disturb the jury nominating this young band from Austria as the competition winner. Congratulations! And our personal note that this year’s competition was much better than last year’s one!

One Way Mirror After some hint of my buddy D-nine I decided to watch the all star band of fronter Guillaume Bideau (Mnemic), drummer Dirk Verbeuren (Soilwork), bassist Loic Colin (Scarve) as the sixstringer brothers Franck and David Potvin (Lyzanxia, Phase 1) it became clear pretty fast this band rocked focussing on their self-titled debut. “Keeping Me Away” or “Empty Spaces” showed hit character and the performance didn’t leave any wish open.

Razor Of Occam The next act presented some Black Thrash sound from their longplayer debut “Homage To Martyrs” which didn’t work that well in its live interpretation. It became monotonous after a while. Cool was the final Whiplash – cover “Spit On Your Grave”.

Vomitory The Swedish Death Metal commando showed how many people were present on the warm up day. The tent was completely filled as many fans stood outside behind the entrances to even see a bit of the show. That one worked pretty well playing by the opener “The Carnage Rages On” and “Serpents” two songs of the new release “Carnage Euphoria” as familiar ones as “Terrorize, Brutalize, Sodomize”, “Chaos Fury”, “Blood Rapture” and “Under Clouds Of Blood”.

God Dethroned The Dutch Death Metal institution which had switched the billing position with Cataract continued killing, musically of course. Presenting new “Passiondale – tracks like “Under A Darkening Sky” “Poison Fog”, “Drowning In Mud” or the title track showed the new variety of Henry Sattler singing clean for a few passages. But they hadn’t lost their brutal factor at all.

Powerwolf The orchestral band started by their usual opener “We Take It From The Living”. They showed a very active performance full of motion and joy presenting by “Raise Your Fist, Evangelist”, “Werewolves Of Armenia” including ‘Hu, Ha!’ – choirs and “Resurrection By Errection” material from their new hammer album “Bible Of The Beast”. The full tent celebrated them, some spectators even held high a flag of Romania! 😀 So vocalist Attila Dorn blessed the audience and left together with his vampires by “Kiss Of The Cobra King” which some person might have taken too verbally. 😉

Cataract The Metalcore – fivepiece showed an appearance full of energy mobilising the left stamina of the audience. Besides “The Separation Of Life And Time” and “Doomed Steps” from the current self-titled output the band concentrated on their “When Triumph Comes Loss” – and “Kingdom” – phase containing “War Of Cultures”, “Killing Tool”, “Tongues Spitting Hate” and the ordinary final “Nothing’s Left”.

Thursday
Main Stage
Katra The day began horrible on the festival’s biggest stage: The Finish Gothic Rock / Metal band tortured my ears by an untight band as a female vocalist singing that much out of tune the steaks on the barbecue of my colleges on the campsite buckled. So their own music some Loona – dancefloor cover didn’t work at all. So the ridiculous question of the bassist (“Are you ready for some serious headbanging?”) could only be answered by “For your sound seriously not!”

Vader After some sound problems in the beginning of the show the Death Metal – commando from Poland demonstrated their immense live experience. They renounced playing material from their just released “Necropolis” and killed by “Epitaph”, “Raise The Undead”, Shadowfear” and “This Is The War”.

Unheilig The Gothic Rock sound completely performed in German found a respectable audience consisting of black suited pairs exploring their very own kind of romance spending applause. Not my can of beer!

J.B.O. Okay, everybody has probably seen a show of the Bavarian Comedy Metal band. They wore pink, appeared for an astonishing big crowd, took care about the harmony factor on the festivalsite and got celebrated for the opener “Im Verkehr”, “Bolle” and the last title “Ein Fest”. Nice, but nothing special!

Kreator No more comedy ruled when the Thrash – attack from Essen entered the stage to show a massive live destruction. The fourpiece offered a well-balanced set between newer (“Hordes Of Chaos”, “Phobia”, “Enemy Of God”, “Violent Revolution”, “Warcurse”) and older (“Terrible Certainty”, “Betrayer”, “Pleasure To Kill”, “Extreme Aggressions”, “Coma Of Souls”, “Flag Of Hate”, the final “Tormentor”) smashers. Some announcement of Mille sounded to extreme when he mentioned after the one before “Pleasure To Kill” he motivated to kill everybody and added not to do it in real. Funny! The performance ruled! Kreator defended their inofficial title as the Thrash Metal kings of Germany.

Cantus Buranus The medieval orchester bombast theatre call-it-something of Cantus Buranus just interested a few spectators who wanted go get asleep before reaching their tent. So nevermind, to some of you it was something exotic. But most of the spectators went to the partytent leaving a bored audience no more able to move.

Pain Stage
Second Relation The teenager Dark Prog band which had won the newcomer contest the day before performed the same set to open the regular open air billing. Nice!

Deadlock The first great appearance of the day was done by the young Bavarian Deathcore – sixpack. After some Techno – intro they started with “Martyr To Science” into their set offering by “The Brave / Agony Applause” and “Deathrace” further songs from their new masterpiece “Manifesto” which killed as the older “Code Of Honor”, “Dark Cell” and “Awakened By Sirens” did. The performance rocked, just one track one guitarist missed his part for three times. The alternating shouts of Joe Prem and the female clean vocals of Sabine Weniger built a cool sound construction giving the songs the right vibe. A sympathic as rocking show of a talented band.

Grand Magus Songs about wolves are even in Dinkelsbühl an exotic element. The Stoner Rock / Doom – trio from Sweden talked as sang about this issue like in the opener “Wolf’s Return”. They didn ‘t reach that many spectators as Deadlock or Vader, but those once left seemed to be okay with Doomsters like “Iron Will” or “Kingslayer”.

Equilibrium The probably most popular Pagan Metal – formation in Germany caught many fans in front of the stage which celebrated “Sturm” or “Nordheim” a lot. The active fronter Helge took care of that fact during the set.

Walls Of Jericho After J.B.O.’s Comedy Metal on the neighbored stage the Hardcore pitbull around the female shouter Candace Kucsulain turned out to a total contrast in comparison to the atmosphere before. The Hardcore – community reacted with pit action to “A Little Piece Of Me”, “All Hail The Dead” and of course to the title track of the latest output “The American Dream”. But it seemed to be a pure die-hard-fan-thing.

Backyard Babies Time for Rock ‘n’ Roll. The Swedish fivepiece didn’t take long to convince the audience to party. “Come Undone”, “Degenerated”, “Dysfunctional” or “People Like Us” didn’t give the crowd another chance. By the way fronter Nicke advised several times to the gig of their friends of Entombed the following day.

Katatonia The Swedes played one of the very mighty shows of this festival summer. The non-reversible Dark Prog Metal (Or just call it Katatonia-sound!) caught the attention of the audience when they performed perls like “Teargas”, “I Am Nothing”, “Ghost Of The Sun”, “My Evil Twin”. The numerous fans reacted with massive headbanging or just dreaming. So the quintet bid farewell with the acoustic triumvirat consisting of “July”, “Evidence” and the old Death Metal – classic “Murder”. I just missed “For My Demons”, but anyway this show ruled!

Partytent
Sylosis Supported by a powerful sound this new Thrash Metal – hopeful from Great Britain played a killing show in the tent in the afternoon. Their set was concentrated on their debut-longplayer “Conclusion Of An Age” containing “Egypt”, the title track, “Warbitch”, “Silence” and the final hammer “Teras”. The band transported lots of live energy and the both guitarists impressed by their abilities leaving several mouths open. Great show!

Suffocation After the action on the two big stages had ended the final program of this brutal night began in the Partytent. The brutal ensemble from New York City blew the fans away with “Blood Oath”, “Catatonia” and “Infecting The Crypts”. What a blast! Just grunter Frank Mullen seemed a bit drunk and talked a bit too much.

Carnifex Another blast was created by the younger Deathcore – attack from San Diego. The tight fivepiece did this from the opener “In Coalesce With Filth & Faith” till the final “Lie To My Face”.

The Faceless What happened in the end of the thursday program deep in the night is difficult to describe. The Prog Death Metal – newcomer played one of the most outstanding shows of this year’s Summer Breeze. Especially compositions from the new masterpiece “Planetary Duality” like “Prison Born”, “Sons Of Belial”, “Legion Of The Serpent”, “Xeno Christ” and “The Ancient Covenant” impressed the fans including me a lot. Awesome!

Friday
Main Stage
Unsun The day began as the day before with Katra: With an untalented Gothic Rock / Metal – band – this time from Poland – with a female vocalist missing her tones much too often.

The Cumshots The musical atmosphere became much better when the Norwegians entered the stage to perform their Death ‘n’ Roll. Party-hymns like “Like Pouring Salt On A Slug”, “Punchdrunk On Death” and “I Drink Alone” took care of a relaxed atmosphere.

Callejon The first attraction of the day for the Metalcore / Screamo – community were the Zombies from Düsseldorf provoking the first circle-pits by “Zombified”, “John Wayne” and the final “Porn From Spain”. Nice gig!

The Other Horror Punk was up to follow, and that’s how the band was suited like wearing blooded masks and white butchers’ skirts. Musically their show rocked by “Tarantula” as by “We Are The Other Ones”.

The Haunted Shouter Peter Dolving had grown himself a big bushy beard letting him look even more weird. With a sympathic combination between sympathy and aggression band as fronter performed their show in which the new smashers “Little Cage” (as opener), “Moronic Colossus” interrupted by the band with a cool statement of Dolving and “Trenches” in which Dolving went in the crowd animating a wall of death as the following pit rocked as familiar ones like “The Flood”, “D.O.A.”, “99” and the final double-hammer “Dark Intensions / Bury Your Dead”. The band left with the outro of Tom Jones’ “It’s Not Unusual”. Peter Dolving rules, and so do The Haunted of course!

Schandmaul It looked like a home match for the Folk Rock – sevenpiece when they appeared in front of a filled up festivalsite in the early evening hours. And those spectators weren’t just there, they all seemed to know the lyrics of “Vogelfrei”, “Leb!” or “Krieger”. Very sympathicc was the dedication of their last title “Dein Anblick” to a victim of a school amok massacre. Thumbs up for this great gesture!!!

Life Of Agony Wow, the innovative NYC Hardcore heroes of the 90s in Dinkelsbühl, I had thought long time when they got confirmed months before the Breeze. And they kicked ass by a hammer start rocking “River Runs Red”, “This Time” and the great backing vocals matchup “Method Of Groove” from their monster debut. But also the following “Love To Let You Down”, “Other Side Of The River” and “Weeds” rocked the crowd. Vocalist Keith Caputo impressed for another time by his incomparable voice although he looked pretty strange. But the band should have deserved more audience. Anyway the present one celebrated a massive appearance and got left with the classics “Through And Through” and “Underground”.

Amon Amarth The vikings did the same procedure as every festival they participate, positively of course: They offered a great show filled with effects as lots of pyros and performed by the intro “Twilight Of The Thunder God”, “Runes To My Memory”, “Guardians Of Asgaard”, “Victorious March”, “Pursuit Of Vikings” as by the encores “Cry Of The Black Birds” and “Death In Fire” a celebrated best of show the band earned a lot of support for.

Pain Stage
The New Black The new German hope in Rock ‘n’ Roll showed their members had collected lots of live experience in their former or still parallel bands. The main aspect besides instumental abillities of the rocking sixstringers or the cool voice of singer Markus who also played the mouth organ in “Simplify”. No, the main issue are rockers like “More Than A Man”, my personal fave “Welcome To Point Black” and the final “Everlasting”.

Battlelore After having fun with Rock ‘n’ Roll Pagan Metal followed, and this didn’t rock at all. Fantasy lyrics as Pagan style didn’t seem to reach that many kids than the years before. So it was much emptier in front of the stages than it had been the bands before while the Finish appeared.

Nim Vind The people didn’t come back to watch by the Canadiens the next Rock ‘n’ Roll attraction.. They presented catchy songs, but a live show always includes stage action besides the songs.

Psychopunch The Rock band from Sweden had played several times on the Summer Breeze and returned with another strong show presenting material from their new longplayer “Death By Misadventure”. The spectatorship took part in the party and celebrated a cool Rock show.

Entombed After a cool intro presenting a preacher concluding that satan exists on tape the band entered the stage to open by the title track of the latest album “Serpent Saints”. And the crowd reacted headbanging and applauding to “When In Sodom”, “Damn Deal Done”, the mighty “Chief Rebel Angel” and the almighty “Wolverine Blues” always motivated by fronter LG Petrov with his short sympathic “Hallo! Alles gut?” – communications. By the way: Ex-Satyricon-sixstringer Victor Brandt replaced the ordinary guitarist and new father Nico Elgstrand well. Old classics were missed.

Sabaton True Metal of the convenient kind got presented by the Swedes. And a band broaching the issue of war of course completely performs in camouflage pants. So did them playing “Panzer Battalion”, “The Art Of War” and “Primo Victoria”. The fans liked the songs as the sympathic performance, especially the one of vocalist Joakim Brodén who didn’t disregard the fun factor.

Amorphis “What’s that?” – “It’s blue light!” – “What does it do?” – “It turns blue!” These “Rambo” – passage would have fit to the wonderful light show of course also regarding other colours. Supported by this visual effect the Finish performed a magic show leaving no wishes open: The mentioned visual effects, the tightness, the voice, the stage action! All aspects of a live show got performed maximum-skilled. Numerous of fans celebrated from the opener “Leaves Scar”, “Against Widows”, “The Castaway”, “The Smoke”, “My Kantele” and “House Of Sleep” as compositions from the new album “Skyforger” like “From The Heaven Of My Heart”, “Sampo” and “Silver Bride”. Awesome!

Haggard Awesome is a word I wouldn’t pull together with the orchestral Gothic Metal appearance of the Bavarians. It became obvious again Asis Nasseri & Co hadn’t evolved over the last decade. Newer as the many performed older tracks bored the same way. Dating for the cinema might be much more exciting! 😉

Partytent
Obscura This German quartet is definitely on a rise to higher levels. The technical high skilled Prog Death Metal convinced in its live performance as well. They concentrated on the songs of their current album “Cosmogenesis” like its as the live opener “Anticosmic Overload”, the hit “Incarnated” reminding to the mighty Death, “Noospheres” or “Centric Flow”. The number of (astonished) spectators raised as well as the number of active headbangers.

Cynic After half of the show of the mighty Life Of Agony I went down to the Partytent to watch the returned kings of Prog Death Metal and it turned out to the absolute right decision. The compositions of the current “Traced In Air” – masterpiece held the same quality (“The Space For This”, “Evolutionary Sleeper”, “Adam’s Murmur”, “Integral Birth”) as the meanwhile 16 years old songs of the milestone “Focus” (“Celestial Voyage”, “Veil Of Maya”, “How Could I?”), the performance was tight and the band reached lots of applause and support.

The Sorrow The tent was pretty filled when the Austrian Metalcore shooting stars played their catchy tracks as “Where Is The Sun?”, “Far Beyond The Days Of Grace”, “Saviour, Welcome Home” as the final “Knights Of Doom” and “Death From A Lovers Hand” which caused a circle pit as a wall of death. So the crowd seemed satisfied.

Protest The Hero Progressive Metalcore? Is that possible? Yes, it is definitely, realised by the fivepiece from Canada. From the beginning they had problems with the sound, especially the too low vocals of singer Arif. But this high talented band was on a mission and played a phenomenal show. And it looked like technical masterpieces as the opener “Bloodmeat”, “Nautical” or “Limb As Limb” had found new fans.

Raunchy After two members of the band had lost a match on the kicker soccer table against my brother in crime Krusher and me (Danmark 5, Germany 6 :-)) the band enthused musically in the Partytent. They played a best of set besides considering material from the current album “Wasteland Discotheque” by “The Bash”, the Rockwell-cover “Somebody’s Watching Me” and “Warriors” besides older hits like “Remembrance”, “I Get What I See”, “Join The Scene” and “Watch Out”. That kicked ass and the tent celebrated them. Just the sound sucked.

Elvenking The last band of the day presented True Metal with the exotic variation of a violin. But after a while this didn’t count that much any more. So just about hundred spectators left in the tent to watch the Italians.

Saturday
Main Stage
Benighted Instead of beginning the day again by a Gothic – band with a horrible singer the last day of this year’s Summer Breeze started with Grindcore grunting about interesting issues like “Slut” or “Grind Wit”.

The Storm It became much lower and melodic when the Danish songwriter duo reinforced by guest musicians. It was a nice alternation, but after a while they felt too harmless. The highlight happened when Volbeat’s Michael Poulsen entered the stage to perform with singer Pernille Rosendahl “Mary Ann’s Place”.

Grave Wow, the Death Metal – legend from Sweden played a real classics’ best of set probably leaving no wishes open. Beginning with “Deformed” and “Obscure Infinity” fronter Ola Lindgren and his three comrades inspired to massive headbanging action in the audience. Further highlights: “Into The Grave” and the last played title “Soulless”.

Born From Pain The Dutch fivepiece killed in front of a big crowd organising a huge wall of death and several circle pits in the sunny afternoon. The powerful sound supported “Rise Or Die”, “Behind Enemy Lines”, “Sons Of A Dying World”, “The New Hate” and “Stop At Nothing”. Just the sympathic as seemingly well-educated fronter Rob who lives in Essen and speaks German fluently talked a bit too much, about society circumstances as about unnnecessary aspects on which festival the sun had disturbed him the most. But that was probably just a symptom of the adrenaline which took care about this killing gig.

Brainstorm The Swabian fivepiece can be announced as a steady guest at the Summer Breeze, and as one of the very few Power Metal – bands which have many fans in the Breeze – community. Their melodic American – related Power Metal and the very agile as sympathic performance of their voice Andy B. Franck must be announced as the main reasons for this fact. “Blind Suffering”, “World’s Are Coming Through”, “Shiva’s Tears”, “Fire Walk With Me”, “End In Sorrow”, “Highs Without Lows” with some animated la-ola-action rocked, and after some ‘dis-the-singer-game’ the band left with “All Those Words” and “How Do You Feel”.

Moonspell Gothic Metal while light and hot temperatures doesn’t work? This seemingly law got imposingly disproved by the Portuguese quintet. Fernando Ribeiro got the point announcing: “Good songs are good under moon and sun.” And so his band rocked in an astonishing relaxed instead of pathetic atmosphere by “Opium”, the newer “Scorpion Flower”, “Full Moon Madness”, “Alma Mater” and “Full Moon Madness” enthusing the masses. Thumbs up for this exemplary appearance.

Volbeat The masses of spectators showed the enormously raised popularity of the Danish band. They started by ”Guitar Gangsters” with a track from the new album “Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood” into their set filled with lots of hits like “Radio Girl”, “Sad Man’s Tongue”, “Pool Of Booze, Booze, Booza” after which Pernille Rosendahl entered the stage to perform with Michael Poulsen “Mary Ann’s Place” as they had done it about six hours ago while the show of Pernille’s band The Storm. After some new unreleased title “The Human Instrument”, “The Garden’s Tale” and “Caroline” finished a great gig inspiring the fans to several singalongs with the band.

Opeth The great masters of brain-affected Metal with high approach had a bad day, not talently but technically. While the first song “Heir Apparent” the guitar amp of Fredrik Akesson sucked. So Mikael Akerfeldt reacted with some small talk as by some jamming. And those problems continued. But also this time the quintet had as much technical bad-luck as nearly possible they convinced by their live performance interpreting masterpieces like “Ghost Of Perdition”, “Harvest”, “The Leper Affinity”, “The Lotus Eater”, “Demon Of The Fall” and “The Drapery Falls”. The high amount of fans filling the festivalsite was convinced, banged their heads and celebrated this wonderful live band.

Pain Stage
Black Sun Aeon Double impact: Before Tuomas Saukkonen appeared with his main band he had introduced his second one. The astonishing number of seemingly interested spectators saw an intense Melodic Death Metal show. The song titles followed some concept being named as “Chapter 1 (A Song For My Introduction)”, “Chapter 3 (A Song For My Demons)”, “Chapter 8 (A Song For My Funeral)”, etc.. A very interesting band we’ll hopefully hear more from in the future.

Before The Dawn After the changeover break including a band on the neighbored Main Stage Tuomas returned with his regular band. This is probably the more melodic one, but also this appearance didn’t let miss any intensity or heavyness. “Faithless”, “Disappear” and “Deadsong”convinced the audience as its live performance did containing the variety between Tuomas grunts and Lars Eikind’s wonderful clean vocals. Six years after I had watched the band for the first time being on tour with Katatonia the Finish rocked again. Seems like Mr. Saukkonen has two hot bands on the run.

Krypteria The German fourpiece around their female voice Ji-In-Cho showed for another time why they are just another superfluous Gothic – band. Sorry, but “Somebody Save Me” or “Devil Down” have nothing new or interesting. That must also have been the opinion of the crowd, the most people went away.

Epica Better Gothic Metal was offered by the Dutch band around the charismatic singer Simone Simons although her yodel parts stuck pretty much on my nerves. But the spectatorship took it with grace applauding to the opener “Indigo”, “Cry Of The Moon” and the final “Consign To Oblivion”.

Evergreen Terrace The five guys from Florida didn’t care about the sun and the hot temperatures they’re used to and enthused by their Metalcore with a cool Skatepunk – element. The band enjoyed having so many supporters in front of the stage celebrating the “Big Lebowski” – related “No Donnie, These Men Are Nihilist”, the title track of their current release “Wolfbiker”, its hit “Chaney Can’t Quite Riff Like Helmet’s Page Hamilton”, by “Enemy Sex” a track from the forthcoming album and the Tears For Fears – cover “Mad World”.

Legion Of The Damned A week after they had convinced me for the probably first time live the Dutch Thrash Metal – hopefuls bored me again. The show didn’t really seem spontaneous performing “Sons Of The Jackal”, “Cult Of The Dead” or “Werewolf Corpse” which caused some headbanging action in the first rows, no more no less.

Voivod It had taken a long long time to see the Canadiens pioneers in experimental Metal. It should had happened in Wacken 1998, but an accident avoided this, and after many tragic occurences, especially the death of Denis “Piggy” d’Amour, it finally came true. His successor Daniel Mongrain did a good job. And perls like “Tribal Conviction” touched in combination with the wonderful light show probably everyone of the too small crowd in front of the stage who initialized Piggy – chants in the end of the show. Amazing!

Deathstars The Gothic Rock – act from Sweden started with “Night Electric Night” into their set in which I didn’t have the impression the music was more important than the outfit. Comprehensible when listening to “Tongues”, “New Dead Nation” or “Blood Stains Blondes”.

Partytent
Narziss Narziss always means Metalcore with german lyrics, a tight band and an intense live show. And so it happened again. Band as fans didn’t seem to care about the very hot conditions in the tent and created several pits while “Meine Kleine Seele”, “Und Du Verblasst” which got dedicated to all hippies and “Entstelltes Bild”. Exemplary was the action of shouter Alex to take care about the supporters by bottles of water. He also invited a few fans to come on stage.

Excrementory Grindfuckers To my surprise it was nearly a mission impossible to get into the tent to watch the grind-weirdos. Those who were in had fun with the David Hasselhoff – tribute “Looking For A Grindcore”, “Staatsgrind Nr. 1”, “Vater Morgana” and with the Europe – related “Final Grinddown”. So in the end they organized a Metal – polonaise. Funny band, but for the next time I would prefer a bigger stage.

Hate The Polish Death Metal massacre entered the stage corpsepainted and wore skirts. Besides this unfitting outfit the music ruled. “Malediction”, “Hex” or “Threnody” are old school Death Metal bulldozers of its best which provoked a lot of headbanging action!

Dagoba The very innovative fourpiece from Marseille started after the “Abyssal” – intro and the title track of the current “Face The Colossus” – album massively into their set. The pit-action increased by modern sounding monsters like “The Man Your’re Not”, “The Nightfall And All Its Mistakes”, “Fall Of Men” and “The Things Within”. Fronter Shawter and his three bandmates impressed by their independent style as by their live – performance. Hope to see and hear more of them soon!

Secrets Of The Moon The in my opinion best german Black Metal – band had the exercise to play the last show of this year’s Summer Breeze. And they surprisingly concentrated on the still unreleased forthcoming longplayer “Privilegivm” performing by the opener “Sulphur”, “Queen Among Rats” and “Black Halo” three of five live tracks. The other two epics were “Seraphim Is Dead” and the final “Lucifer Speaks” from the latest release “Antithesis”. Although the band didn’t move that much their apperance became mastetic.

Conclusion:
The Summer Breeze 2009 turned out to a big success. It was sold out months before. The organization on the festivalsite convinced as it had done before. The investments in the bought area took care about much improved conditions at the entrance for wednesday. And most visitors arrived on wednesday without to have wait too long to get in. This fact might be a reason to enlarge the Partytent for the warmup. The ways between the stages were pretty short, the hill on its way got ballasted again. The concept with the two open air stages alternating each other and the parallel tent stage showing you bands until the deepest night and worked very well. For another time the Summer Breeze offered a well-balanced billing concerning the quality as the variety of music. The food mile also impressed by a big variety and the prices for food and beverages were fair (e.g. 3,- € for a 0,4 l can of beer or softdrink). We appreciated the Summer Breeze 2009 and will return in 2010 for sure! So see you there! Special thanks go out to David Gregori and the Summer Breeze-team!!!!!
At the Summer Breeze rocked, drank and partied Tobi Wan Kenobi, Yvi, Vera and Verena!!!!!
