And this became very special as emotional: To honor the passed SB-organizer Michael „T“ Trengert the Summer Breeze placed the „T-Party“ instead of the former Nuclear Blast label night on wednesday. Six bands having a strong relationship to the SB-visionary as former Metal Blade Europe manager as top secret held surprise acts getting confirmed just one day before appearing on the T-Stage. To celebrate this in appropriate conditions this stage got transformed from a tent into an open stage. Otherwise thousands of the present visitors couldn’t have watched big names like Amon Amarth, In Extremo or Powerwolf. Definitely the right decision!
After the doors had opened for the program of the two big stages the billing impressed by Megadeth, Children Of Bodom, Korn, Heaven Shall Burn, Kreator, Amon Amarth (with another show), etc.. Those two stages got renamed into Summer Stage and Breeze Stage. But the exclusive novelty about those two biggest stages of the festival was in uniting it to one stage with a twisting backline. So while a band played the crew of the following one built up their stage set. On this stage the Nuclear Blast label celebrated its 25th anniversary on friday by filling the running order exclusively with their acts.
The weather guaranteed the right atmosphere for this jubileum, the organization worked well as usual. At this year’s Summer Breeze 122 bands appeared on four stages (without the Campsite Circus) in four days for about 40000 visitors (Sold out!).

Wednesday
T-Stage: T-Party
Born From Pain The T-Party started with red fire works and four guys entering the stage holding torches and a banner with the message „Michael Trengert unvergessen“. After this magic moment the Dutch Hardcore fivepiece which had got discovered by him started the first loud tones on the new open stage by „Death And The Dead City“, „Sons Of A Dying World“, „The New Hate“ as „Stop At Nothing“.
Vomitory This turned out to become a rare live show experiencing the Death Metal institution returning on stage for these 45 minutes (so far) after they had split in 2013. The younger spectators probably didn’t know about that, but many of them headbanged to „Eternal Trail Of Corpses“ and „Chaos Fury“.
In Extremo The sevenpiece from Berlin reminded of Mr Trengert as one of their first important mentors by a very rare setlist consisting of classics from their first three longplayer records. From the opener „Wind“, over „Herr Mannelig“, „Ai Vis Lo Lop“ as „Palästinalied“ up to „Omnia Sol Temperat“, „Spielmannsfluch“ and „Frei Zu Sein“ the pretty filled up T-Stage area celebrated the Folk Metal ensemble and this special as unique setlist.
Powerwolf The quintet have made it up to one of Germany’s leading Power Metal bands nowadays. Before all of this they got experienced by Mr Trengert publishing their records on his Metal Blade label. After releasing several albums as participating about as many times at the Summer Breeze they populated the T-Stage area. The crowd was ready for partying to „Coleus Sanctus“, „Amen And Attack“, „Resurrection By Errection“, „Werewolves Of Armenia“, as „Kiss Of The Cobra King“ which got performed live fot the first time after a few years. „We Drink Your Blood“ marked the end of another successful Metal mass.
Amon Amarth The Viking Death Metal fivepiece have been the flagship of the mentioned Metal Blade label for more than a decade. And they enthused the packed festival area by a rare setlist as well containing by „The Last With Pagan Blood“, „Gods Of War Arise“ and „Versus The World“ tracks the Swedes hadn’t played for a longer time. Their fans filled up the festival area and celebrated their viking heroes headbanging. So the final „Victorious March“ summed these 90 minutes up very well.
Destruction As expected several spectators had left the festival area after three bands with headliner qualities, but those who had stayed, were able to experience the Teutonic Thrash trio with another special setlist. The headbanging intensity raised during „Nailed To The Cross“, „Mad Butcher“, „Second To None“ and „Thrash Till Death“.

Thursday
Summer Stage
The New Roses After spectating the first turn of the twisting stage the audience welcomed The New Roses instead of the canceled Xandria. Heavy Rock titles like „Gimme Your Love“, „It’s A Long Way“ and „Without A Trace“ took care of the party vibe in the crowd.
Miss May I The fivepiece from Ohio held the atmospheric Metalcore level high by their inspiring performance. The fans jumped, headbanged and crowdsurfed to the opener „Lost In The Grey“, „Swallow Your Teeth“, „Under Fire“ and the title track of their new album as to more familiar songs as „Relentless Chaos“, „Casualties“ and „Forgive And Forget“.
Obituary Floriday Death Metal while Florida weather were the conditions for the following hour. Their massive stiring sound animated lots of headbangers to „Turned Inside Out“, „Chopped In Death“ as to the new tracks „A Lesson In Vengeance“ and „Ten Thousand Ways To Die“.
Life Of Agony The following hour showed the Alternative Hardcore quartet was too old for the mainly younger audience or vice versa. In comparison to the bands before it became pretty empty although the band from New York City had many hits from the past in their setlist. For those ones who had stayed the opening triple „River Runs Red“, „This Time“ and „Method Of Grove“ left no doubt about their live power. But it seemed like Mina Caputo wasn’t amused about the attendance. By „World Gone Mad“ the band considered one track from their new album „A Place Where There’s No Pain“. So „Through And Through“ as „Underground“ finished a show many visitors shouldn’t have missed.
Megadeth Supported by huge screens as an impressive stage set the big-4-band opened by „Hangar 18“ and didn’t hesitate to let follow by „Wake Up Dead“, „In My Darkest Hour“ and „Sweating Bullets“ more jubilated classics. The current „Dystopia“ album got considered by „The Threat Is Real“, „Conquer Or Die!“, „Poisonous Shadows“ and the title track. In between this the wonderful „A Tout Le Monde“ as „Trust“ from the 90ies band’s phase created an inspiring atmosphere which culminated in „Symphony Of Destruction“ as in the topical „Peace Sells“ including the guest appearance of the band mascot Vic Rattlehead. „Holy Wars… The Punishment Due“ finished a good show, during which Dave Mustaine just could have communicated a bit more.
In Extremo After honoring their early days while the show the day before the sevenpiece celebrated their thousandth show opening by „Feuertaufe“ with lots of pyros. The inspired fans celebrated the Folk Rock icon from that start on over the newer „Störtebeker“ and „Quid Pro Quo“ as classics like „Liam“ and „Rasend Herz“. Kreator’s mainman Mille Petrozza entered the stage to perform together „Unsichtbar“ which was one of the rare moments to see Mille appearing without a guitar. „Sängerkrieg“, „Sternhagelvoll“, „Frei Zu Sein“ and „Spielmannsfluch“ turned out to further highlights jubilated as sang along by thousands of fans before during „Pikse Palve“ the Summer Breeze anniversary fire works started.

Breeze Stage
Firkin It was up to the Hungarian Folk Rock sevenpiece to play the premier gig on the new twisting stage which got pretty impressive with the gargoyle sculptures around. With their pretty Irish influenced „Donnegal Danny“, Drunken Sailor Song“ as „Johnny I Hardly Knew Ya“ they offered the right soundtrack to start the party.
While She Sleeps The first loud tones got set by the quintet from Sheffield with „You Are We“. Their Metalcore caused much more motion on the festival ground than just applause as it had happened while the Rock acts before. Finally this turned out in singalongs for „Four Walls“, the new hit „Silence Speaks“ and „Hurricane“.
Whitechapel The heavyness factor got even erased by the US-sixpack. Their Deathcore as „Our Endles War“, „Possibillities Of An Impossible“ or „Diggs Road“ wasn’t performed for compromise, and so this resulted in more pit-action.
August Burns Red As on their tour the quintet from Pennsylvania celebrated the tenth anniversary of their second album „Messengers“ by the first seven performed songs like the opener „Truth Of A Liar“, „Back Burner“, „Composure“ or „An American Dream“. After this they presented by „Invisible Enemy“ a brandnew composition from the forthcoming release which got advertised while the changeovers. A little best of between those two mentioned outputs finished a convincing Metalcore appearance.
Devin Townsend Project Massive Grooves, a sympathic entertainer behind the microphone and simply great art awaited the audience from the opener „Rejoice“ on. After the new „Transcending“ – tracks „Stormbending“ and „Failure“ the older „Deadhead“ created an incomparable atmosphere. Before „Supercrush!“ Anneke van Giersbergen, especially known from her former band The Gathering as by her guest vocal participations on Devins latest masterpieces, entered the stage and returned for the mighty „Kingdom“, „Grace“ and „Higher“ to perform together which resulted in even more support than the band had got anyway. Between the compositions Devin showed his great sense of humor by ironic comments. A very short hour!
Amon Amarth After their old school set the day before the Swedes started with „The Pursuit Of Vikings“ in front of a huge viking helmet into their regular headliner set. And this included a couple of specials as well: While „The Way Of Vikings“, „Deceiver Of The Gods“ and „Father Of The Wolf“ viking actors fought on the stage, many pyros set the stage in flames, and after the encore starter „Raise Your Horns“ Doro entered the stage to perform „A Dream That Cannot Be“ together. The packed festival area jubilated loud, headbanged and sang along nearly all lyrics. So „Guardians Of Asgard“ and „Twilight Of The Thunder God“, during which fronter Johan Hegg fought as defeated a dragon, finished the second headliner show within pretty exactly 24 hours.
Wardruna After the three big shows of Megadeth, Amon Amarth and In Extremo many spectators of course left the festival area. So just a small crowd stayed to support the Norwegian Pagan Folk ensemble from the opener „Tyr“ up to the final „Helvegen“.

T-Stage
Tesseract What followed turned out into an absolute highlight of this weekend. Starting with the new „Smile“ from the forthcoming album while hot heat in the afternoon the Djent quintet showed a tight as intensive show. Lead by the great voice of the returned Dan Tompkins „Concealing Fate, Part 2: Deception“ caused sweating headbangers celebrating „Survival“ and „Of Mind – Nocturne“ as well. And so did two seemingly very drunk as attractive ladies who entertained me as a few other neighbors dancing as falling. Anyway, outstanding performance!
Architects The five guys from the UK filled the T-Stage area enormously. Beginning by the newer „All Our Gods Abandoned Us“ – songs „Nihilist“ and „Deathwish“ the crowd got in motion, and this became furious from the following „These Colors Don’t Run“ on. While the increasing darkness this show became kind of epic. Vocalist Sam Carter’s animal rights announcement might have touched nearly everyone. Band as audience were one celebrating „Broken Cross“, „Naysayer“, „A Match Made In Heaven“ as „Gone With The Wind“.

Friday
Summer Stage
Cellar Darling The new band founded by ex-Eluveitie-members welcomed a respectable number of supporters. Of course their set consisted of titles from their debut release. And during the opener „Black Moon“, „Avalanche“ as the final „Challenge“ it became clearer and clearer Anna Murphy is made for the lead vocals role.
Battle Beast The female-fronted fivepiece from Helsinki mainly considered tracks from their new release „Bringer Of Pain“, except for „Black Ninja“ and „Touch In The Night“. Somehow their Melodic Metal didn’t really catch me although vocalist Noora Louhimo showed her entertainer qualities.
Betontod The German Punk Rock icon returned to Dinkelsbühl to perform new „Revolution“ tracks like the title track, „Küss Mich“, „Ich Nehme Dich Mit“ and „Freunde“ as classics like „Keine Popsongs“, „Auf Eine Gute Zeit“ and „Viva Punk“ sung by hundreds of supporters. In a few years they probably appear a bit later on the same stage again.
Eluveitie Just about six hours their ex-bandmembers had appeared with their new band Cellar Darling on the same stage Switzerland’s Folk Metal institution populated the stage. On this day their SB-participation was special because on this friday they released their brandnew longplayer record „Evocation II – Pantheon“ of which they introduced „Lvgvs“ and „Epona“. During the show it became obvious how many songs got sung by the new vocalist Fabienne Erni while original member Chrigel had less parts in the line-up before. When they performed the final band anthem „Inis Mona“ this all didn’t help to hold the crowd because of hard rain just had started.
Children Of Bodom Due to a storm warning the Finnish sixpiece had to shorten their program before opening by „Deadnight Warrior“, „Needled 24/7“ and „Hatebreeder“ while intense rain. But the astonishing number of fans who seemingly didn’t care about this followed fronter Alexi Laiho into „Fuck the raine“ – chants as through „Warheart“, „Hate Me!“, „Everytime I Die“ as „Hatecrew Deathroll“ while more and more fans returned in front of the stage as the atmosphere raised. The encores „The Nail“, „Bodom After Midnight“ and „Towards Dead End“ concluded a jubilated show against any natural obstacles.
Wintersun The slot after headliners as Kreator, Children Of Bodom and Hatebreed might be one of the hardest, but is always a chance. So the grown Finnish fivepiece, which allowed vocalist Jari Mäenpää to concentrate on his vocals while new guitarist Asim Searah did a good job on guitar as the substitute drummer Rolf Pilve did himself, tried to hold the left audience on the festival area. And in parts they did when they opened by the brandnew „The Forest Seasons“ – track „Awaken From The Dark Slumber“ as by more familiar ones as „Winter Madness“ and „Beyond Winter And Sun“. With the live premier of „Eternal Darkness (Autumn)“ they finished a jubilated gig.

Breeze Stage
Aversions Crown Who hadn’t woken up definitely did with the first tones of the Deathcore fivepiece from Brisbane. Besides „The Glass Sentient“ and „Hollow Planet“ they mainly focused on material of their „Xenocide“ output. To me this sound similar to Black Dahlia Murder happened a bit too early.
Memoriam This collaboration of former Bolt Thrower and Benediction – members attracted an astonishing grown crowd. By „Dronestrike V3“ and „Nothing Remains“, which got dedicated to Karl Willet’s dementia diseased mother, the fourpiece presented two songs of the forthcoming release. Even more special became the performance of the Bolt Thrower classic „Spearhead“ causing the most headbangers.
Sonata Arctica After Battle Beast the next Melodic Metal quintet from Suomi followed. They began by „Closer To An Animal“ from the current „The Ninth Wave“ release before playing a best of set containing „Full Moon“, „I Have A Right“, „Black Sheep“ as „Don’t Say A Word“ getting much applause and singalongs.
Epica Supported by several pyro effects the Dutch leaders in Symphonic Metal played a well-balanced set between material of the new „The Holographic Principle“ release („Edge Of The Blade“, „A Phantasmic Parade“, „Ascension – Dream State Armageddon“, „Beyond The Matrix“) and classics like „The Essence Of Silence“, „Cry For The Moon“ as „Consign To Oblivion“ which got especially celebrated by the fans. Lead by the charismatic voice of Simone Simons who probably attracted all male views over this hour the show became a success.
Hatebreed Two as four years ago the leaders of US New School Hardcore appeared on the headliner position. But in the evoluted SB-billing they still had an important schedule role. Jamey Jasta & Co started with „To The Threshold“ motivated anyway. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut „Satisfaction Is The Death Of Desire“ they played all its tracks, but not in a row. They mixed it with „Looking Down The Barrel Of Today“ and „Seven Enemies“ of their recent release „The Concrete Confessional“ as with the classics „Live For This“, „I Will Be Heard“, „This Is Now“ and the final „Destroy Everything“ while massive pit-action of their numerous fans celebrated this memorable gig.
Kreator The German Thrash Metal icon started with „Hordes Of Chaos (A Necrologue For The Elite), „Phobia“ and lots of pyros. Both was necessary to warm up the fans in the rain. Surrounded by huge screens as an impressive stage set the fourpiece set the crowd in motion by headbanging as mosh-pits while „People Of The Lie“, „Phantom Antichrist“, „Enemy Of God“ as „Extreme Aggression“. Tracks from the new release „Gods Of Violence“ like „Satan Is Real“, the title song, „Fallen Brother“, „Hail To The Hordes“ and „World War Now“ got celebrated as well. Animated by mainman Mille Petrozza being under fire their numerous fans mobilzed the rest of their stamina for the encores „Violent Revolution“ and „Pleasure To Kill“. And although they didn’t play „Flag Of Hate“ every fan got satisfied by this show.
Amorphis After Wintersun the stage stayed Suomi-dominated. With Olli-Pekka Laine back on board, replacing Niclas Etälevuori after 17 years on bass, the four original members of Amorphis were reunited with keyboarder Santeri Kallio and vocalist Tomi Joutson. This line-up performed a wonderful final of this day’s Nuclear Blast program finishing with the great triple „The Smoke“, „Into Hiding“ and „House Of Sleep“. And although it was getting colder after the rain numerous fans perseverefed to celebrate this amazing show.

T-Stage
Fallujah After technical problems in its beginning the quintet from San Francisco performed one of the most outstanding shows of the whole weekend. Their high-skilled Prog Death animated by „Abandon“, „Scar Queen“ as their finisher „The Void Alone“ several spectators to headbang. This art, its tight performance and the cool announcements for sure won many fans in the hot noon. Awesome!
Sacred Reich For the first time the US-Thrash-Metal-institution appeared on the Summer Breeze. And they had attracted many fans onto the T-Stage-area before they began by „Ignorance“ and „Administrative Decisions“. After this the sympathic Phil Rind did a clear message about „some orange person“ to let follow the mighty „One Nation“.The crowd celebrated „Crimes Against Humanity“, „Independent“ as „The American Way“ headbanging, singing each word along and becoming part of the mosh-pits. The fourpiece seemingly enjoyed these 45 minutes a lot before closing with „Surf Nicaragua“.
Insomnium Two hours till midnight on this stage seemed like the perfect slot for the Finns. They ignored their current concept-one-song-album „Winter’s Gate“ and decided for a best of set. Motivated as always they performed „While We Sleep“, „Only One Who Waits“, „The Killjoy“, „Mortal Share“ and the final „Weighed Down With Sorrow“ technical tight and about as much banging as their fans in the first row. Lead by the a bit German speaking fronter Niilo Sevänen the sympathy factor didn’t miss. As always a brilliant show by this wonderful band!

Saturday
Summer Stage
Excrementory Grindfuckers After repeatedly filling the former Party Tent the years before the Comedy Grindcore group made it to the big stage. So they did in Dinkelsbühl by newer songs („Suckerpunch“, „Fire With Fire“) as classics („Mother Machine“, „We Are The Others“). Sympathic performance!
Emil Bulls The Crossover fivepiece from Munich is a familiar band at the Summer Breeze. No wonder, as each time they filled the festival area with numerous fans jumping, crowdsurfing and singing along with „The Most Evil Spell“, „The Way Of The Warrior“, „The Jaws Of Oblivion“, „Nothing In This World“, „When God Was Sleeping“ as „Between The Devil And The Deepblue Sea“. A high hit frequency was given, and there was no option to refuse.
Overkill „Mean, Green, Killing Machine“ was the opener and introduced the US-Thrash-veterans for their Summer Breeze debut quite well. After this only track from their new output „The Grinding Whell“ Blitz, D.D. Verni & Co let follow a best of program contaning „Rotten To The Core“, „Hello From The Gutter“, „In Union We Stand“, „Ironbound“ and the final The Subhumans cover „Fuck You“.
Heaven Shall Burn HSB-appearances in Dinkelsbühl have always been outstanding as magic shows with huge pits. Surrounded by some kind of a post-industrial as eco-pre-apocalyptic stage set the atmosphere got strengthened by „Voice Of The Voiceless“, „Land Of The Upright Ones“, „Forlorn Skies“, the new „Wanderer“-single „Corium“ and „Combat“. Light show, pyro-effects as especially shouter Marcus Bischoff motivated the crowd to invest the last reserves. And they did headbanging, crowdsurfing as creating for another time the largest pits of the weekend. After the phenomenal triple „Hunters Will Be Hunted“, „Counterweight“ and „Endzeit“ the quintet returned to perform the also massive „They Shall Not Pass“ and „Godiva“. The band bid farewell with the Edge Of Sanity – cover „Black Tears“ and a special surprise by the support of original EOS-fronter Dan Swanö. Tremendous!
Cantus Buranus The Folk Classic collaboration became for another time pompous as somehow impressive. From „Custodes Sunt Raptores“ to „Fortuna“ I wasn’t quite sure if the audience was enthused, astonished, shocked or bored.

Breeze Stage
Mr Hurley & Die Pulveraffen Who appears successfully as the wake-up-call on the Party San Open Air can achieve the same goal on the Summer Breeze the organizer might have thought. Their Pirate Folk didn’t catch me at all, but many others populating the „Tortuga“ area at 11:00 a.m..
Primal Fear Usually Power Metal isn’t the most popular subgenre in the Summer Breeze community, but the Swabian formation around its founder Mat Sinner and Metal siren Ralf Scheepers from the close Esslingen attracted numerous fans headbanging with „In Metal We Trust“, „Chainbreaker“ and the final „Metal Is Forever“.
Mono Inc. To me it’s still a riddle why combos like the German Gothic group attract that many spectators in front of the stage, but somehow it works. The fourpiece from Hamburg opened by their new „Together Till The End“ by its title track as „The Banks Of Eden“. The first highlight was set by the guest appearance of Major Voice singing „Potter’s Field“ as the Black-cover „Wonderful Life“. Not to forget about the second cover of Gary Moore’s „After The War“ earning much applause as well.
Knorkator First of all front-weirdo Stumpen invited all press photographers. The concert started with „Alter Mann“, „Ich Lass Mich Klonen“ and „Ich Bin Der Boss“. After this prelude the all-girl-band On The Rocks entered the stage to interpret together with Knorkator their classics „Der Ultimative Mann“, „Geld“ and „Ich Hasse Musik“ in big-band-sound. The fans celebrated this exclusive intermezzo as the usual performance of their classics „Du Nich“, „Böse“ and the final „Wir Werden Alle Sterben“.
Dark Tranquillity On an optimal billing position the Swedes got welcomed by thousands of fans. Those ones freaked out while „The Lesser Faith“, „The Treason Wall“, the new „Atoma“-single „Forward Momentum“, „Terminus (Where Death Is Most Alive)“, „Monochromatic Stains“, „The Wonders At Your Feet“ as „ThereIn“ and probably set a new record for lots of crowdsurfers. The band which got supported by the well-known Christopher Amott (ex-Arch Enemy) and Anders Iwers (Tiamat, Cemetary, etc.) played tight. Vocalist Mikael Stanne was agile as his known for, and this time even more: During the final „Misery’s Crown he crowdsurfed from the stage to the sound tower and back still performing his lyrics. World class!
Korn To appear as the second headliner of the evening right after Heaven Shall Burn might not be the most wished billing position on a German festival. And the reactions while the opener „Rotting In Vain“ from their current album „The Serenity Of Suffering“ were pretty low. This changed with the following „Falling Away From Me“, „Here To Stay“ and „Y’ All Want A Single“ which motivated the masses to get in motion for one last time. Especially classics like „Got The Life“ and „Coming Undone“, in which they installed a short interlude of Queen’s „We Will Rock You“, earned the loudest reactions by the audience. With the encores „4 U“, their first hit „Blind“ and the all-time-fave „Freak On A Leash“ the Bakersfield-band concluded a completely convincing concert. Cool!
Finntroll In lack of any new or just current release the Pagan Metal icon from Helsinki played a well-balanced best of set regarding all their albums. „Jaktens Tid“, „Trollhammeren“ as „Skogsdotter“ got celebrated by their fans for the show final on the big stage of this year’s SB-jubileum-edition.

T-Stage
Tiamat It followed the most magic as strange hour. The special „Wildhoney“-set playing their most successful as famous album in its entirety. Magic as expected sounded the opening by „Whatever That Hurts“ and „The Ar“. As special became the participation with original member Anders Iwers for „Gaia“. On the other hand mainman Johan Edlund seemed to be drunk or under drug influence acting that lethargic. Anyway he thanked as praised the supporters a lot. Nevertheless „Visionaire“ as „Pocket Size Sun“ didn’t lose anything of its quality. For the encore Edlund let the fans decide between „Vote For Love“ or „The Sleeping Beauty“, and of course they voted for the latest named classic which marked a worthy end of the show.
The food mile offered the well-known variety with solid prices. Those ones increased a bit for the drinks (e.g. 4 € for 0,4 l can of beer or softdrink).

Conclusion:
Years ago the Summer Breeze had developped by 40000 visitors to the second biggest Metal festival right after Wacken, and it still has raised. But while this it hasn’t lost anything of its relaxed atmosphere because it has evolved slowly as planned, so the organization has raised as much each time. The weather offered nearly everything this year: Mostly sunny as usual, but some rain including a storm warning responsible. But the SB was prepared and reacted professional saving the people on the infield for the necessary time, etc.. The food mile offered the well-known variety while most of the prices stayed constant while those ones for the drinks increased a bit (e.g. 4 € for 0,4 l can of beer or softdrink).
So we are looking forward to Summer Breeze 2018!!!
