1.: More bands announced
Christmas and New Year’s Eve are only just gone with their Advent Calendar and End-of-the-year Countdown, and already our booking office presents the next few highlights to keep your neck muscles in shape. Look forward to more big names and hopefuls on the SUMMER BREEZE 2011 bill.
The grand masters of Northern hyperblast are coming: KATAKLYSM! Compared to their last appearance in Dinkelsbühl in 2008, however, this characterization is only 50% accurate nowadays, as on their last three, justifiedly acclaimed albums, ‘In The Arms Of Devastation’, ‘Prevail’ and ‘Heaven’s Venom’, the Canadians have mutated from a blast-heavy death combo to accomplished songwriters with varied songs. From the unbelieavably fast double bass attacks to the all-destroying slo-mo crushers and extremely catchy choruses, Maurizio Iacono and his cohorts have mastered all facets of death metal, which has made them into a nearly unbeatable powerhouse. Furthermore, their gig at this year’s SUMMER BREEZE is going to be something very special. We’re talking about the band’s 20th anniversary show, which will obviously be captured on camera for a future DVD release. Make sure you secure your place in the front row!

3.: NEW BLOOD AWARD 2011
It’s a small anniversary for the NEW BLOOD AWARD this year, as it’s round five for our newcomer contest. The winners of the last few years have already shown what different kinds of talent exist in our scene, who find a platform at SUMMER BREEZE. This mix is the essence of an extraordinary newcomer contest which presents a little change in 2011, making it even more interesting for all of you. While limited to the German-speaking countries in the last few years, the NEW BLOOD AWARD finally goes international, getting ready for the competition from near and far. As of now, we welcome all applications from non-German-speaking countries, taking the contest to the next level.

The NEW BLOOD AWARD is one of the most important prizes for young, up-and-coming metal bands. The winner’s from the last few years – STITCH, FUCK YOUR SHADOW FROM BEHIND, SECOND RELATION and BLEEDING RED – have shown there are high-quality bands in the underground and that it’s time to offer international bands a platform too.

Tradition has it that the winners will get the chance to open the SUMMER BREEZE festival on one of the open air stages, presenting their material to an expert audience at one of Germany’s biggest festivals. Furthermore, the band will receive the specially made NEW BLOOD AWARD on one of the open air stages.

Graspop: LINEUP IS SHAPING UP – 50 NAMES SO FAR!

The line-up for the 2011 edition of Graspop Metal Meeting is definitely shaping up! These are the newcomers: BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, BAPTIZED IN BLOOD and ENDLESS DARK. Last week we were able to announce AVENGED SEVENFOLD and OPETH. Still 25 names to go!

This Welsh metalcore band BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE needs no introduction and with their fourth appearance at GMM they are fast becoming something of a household name in Dessel. The band is a crowd favourite, the guys love it at GMM and they never disappoint. The recently released ‘tour edition’ of their latest album ‘Fever’ included a bonus DVD with three tracks from their 2010 GMM set, which illustrates the band’s special relationship with our festival. Welcome back boys! (Saturday 25 June)

What started one day as a modest Californian metalcore band on a small Belgian label has grown into a modern heavy metal band that sells out major arenas in the States, Japan and Europe. In 2009, fate struck AVENGED SEVENFOLD a horrible blow with the untimely death of drummer Jimmy ‘The Rev’ Sullivan. The tight-knit group of friends reacted by focusing on a single mission: honouring their friend with a fantastic new record. ‘Nightmare’ was released in 2010 and, truth be told, Sullivan couldn’t have wished for a better tribute. A7X has a great live reputation so be sure to check them out on Sunday 26 June!

Some bands never get old and draw larger and larger crowds as time goes on. OPETH is definitely one of those bands. They single-handedly developed a flamboyant crossover between progressive seventies rock and the melodic but brutal death metal of their hometown Stockholm. The result is a cocktail of sharp contrasts where subdued, semi-acoustic passages with soothing vocals suddenly degenerate into pounding riffs with a roaring underbelly grunt. This may appear an unlikely combination to the uninitiated, but the ease with which these musical geniuses create seemingly endless and spellbinding compositions will convince even die-hard skeptics. Moreover, front man Mikael Åkerfeldt is a natural entertainer with a great sense of humour. This year marks the band’s twentieth anniversary so be sure to invite yourself to this party. (Sunday 26 June)

Thrash is back – even though some will say it never really went away. The fact remains that a truckload of new bands are pumping fresh blood into the genre. One of those exciting new bands is the Ontario-based thrash quartet BAPTIZED IN BLOOD. They appeared out of nowhere but the newcomers still managed to sign a deal with Roadrunner Records. BIB combines thrash riffs with a hint of Swedish melodious death metal à la Soilwork and let me tell you, it rocks like a mother! (Sunday 26 June)

Last year a puny Icelandic volcano messed up air traffic all across Europe and lots of international acts were forced to interrupt their tour because of the colossal ash cloud. Twelve months later, Iceland’s latest export product is ready to conquer the world. ENDLESS DARK from Ólafsvík/Grundarfjörður (who comes up with those names?) may be relatively new on the scene but their music will definitely appeal to fans of Bring Me the Horizon, Parkway Drive, Escape the Fate and the like. This six-piece post-hardcore band is gearing up for an international breakthrough so GMM2011 is the ideal opportunity for an introduction. (Friday 24 June)
